What every freelance invoice needs.

An invoice isn’t a payment request — it’s a legal document. Make sure yours always includes:

  • Invoice number. Unique and sequential — essential for your records and client accounting.
  • Issue and due date. Never just 'due upon receipt' — always a specific calendar date.
  • Itemized line items. Each service as its own line, not bundled into one 'project fee.'
  • Payment instructions. How to pay and where to send it — bank transfer, card link, or both.
  • Late fee policy. State it on the invoice itself, not just the contract.
